1. He must have a male cat that is named after a philosopher, author or another great thinker. The cat must also have red and white fur and an uneven number of stripes on its tail. (okay, okay, the first three points on this list are kind of negotiable)
2. … Alternatively, it would also be fine with me if he had a Golden Retriever that listens to the name “Nifkin”.
3. His appearance must have a strong resemblance to at least (!) one of the following people: Brad Pitt, John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Kevin Costner, Richard Gere, George Clooney, Ben Affleck, Hugh Grant … (this point is definitely negotiable, though).
4. He should have the gift to make my heart skip a beat whenever he smiles at me. (This point is not negotiable!)
5. Once in a while, he should give me flowers just because he loves me. And even if the flowers only bloom for a day, he should buy them anyway to show that even a short moment is worth for him to show me his love.
6. He should know which books I am reading and be able to discuss them with me.
7. His voice should be deep and soft and his words like a warm blanket wrapped around my soul when he talks to me.
8. He should have strong arms to hold me, a wide chest to lean against and a soft belly to cuddle with.
9. His eyes should be big, deep and sparkle. The color does not matter so much, but they need to be full of dreams and see beyond the surface of people and things.
10. He should miss me when I am not around and think of me the last moment before he falls asleep at night and the first moment he wakes up in the morning.
11. He should be kind and loving.
12. He should be tender.
13. He should be grateful to have me.
14. He should be able to apologize and accept apologies.
15. He should accept me with all my faults and flaws, just as I would do that for him.
16. He should call me, before I get the chance to give him a call.
17. We should be able to learn from each other. He should be able to talk about things that make me curious, things that I had never thought about before. But he should also listen to what I can teach him and what I have to say about the world.
18. He should equally participate in housework and chores.
19. He needs to love children and want children of his own (someday).
20. He should love the ocean side, the salty air and the ticklish feeling of sand beneath his toes.
21. He must have the mercy to believe that there is a higher force than human. He does not need to have the same faith as I do, even though that would be a plus, but at least he needs to respect my faith.
22. He needs to believe in the good (of people, the universe, life etc.).
23. He should write me love letters that make my eyes fill with tears and goose bumps cover my arms when I read them.
24. He should secretly keep mementos from dates we went on and never tell his friends about our intimate moments.
25. He should love movies (yes - that includes chick flicks), malls (at least once in a while), coffee shops and Panera Bread (of course).
26. He should keep a journal.
27. He needs to own at least one pair of black shoes, a pair of khakis and a tie that he can knot without my help, but he should not wear these things together.
28. He needs to play a musical instrument, preferably the piano, the saxophone or a string instrument.
29. He must have a spark of Abenteuerlust inside his chest that urges him to explore the world around us - near and far. Besides, he should have a genuine interest in the culture and history of places.
30. He should still own a teddy bear from his childhood.
31. Sometimes he should have worries or insecurities but he should not be scared to reveal these emotions to me.
32. In 40 years, he should be the man in the family portrait sitting next to me surrounded by our children and grandchildren.
33. Somehow, my hormones and I like guys with a five o’clock shadow and/ or glasses. (Go figure!)
34. We feel even more attracted to guys that use after shave, because then I can smell him in places he stayed even if he has left them a while ago. (This point is a big must! – And who says you can only use after shave after you shaved?!)
35. He should ask me at least twice a day (in the morning and at night) “How are you doing?” but more importantly he should really care about what I answer to this question.
36. He should stand behind me when I present my work in public, next to me when we walk through life together and step in front of me when he sees the opportunity to follow his dream.
37. He should have a plan, ambitions and ideas about the future, our future, and talk to me about them.
38. He should care about me, not about how others might perceive me.
39. He should never try to change me. Especially not if he does never listens to suggestions for change himself.
40. He should not talk about his former girlfriends and never mention them, when I do not ask about them (in other words: never).
41. He should not be perfect and (even more importantly) not act as if he were.
42. He should court me, fight for me, respect me and wait for me.
43. He should be a gentleman, because a gentleman is a person that makes everyone else feel comfortable in his presence.
44. Every morning, when he wakes up next to me, he should feel like he found his place in this world.
45. He must love me. (Believe it or not: This last point has proven itself to be the most unrealistic demand on this list and is the main reason why I am still single. But hey, I am an optimistic person!)
What I do NOT care about is:
- his car
- his favorite sports team
- (too many) muscles
- and any kind of sound that he can produce with body parts that do not belong to the voice apparatus and that are not meant to be used for the purpose of communication
